In Sri Lanka, surfing has been a popular tourist attraction since the 70s. With warm ocean currents all year round, and rides which vary from gentle to mildly dramatic the island is dotted with great locations to try your skills. And, whether you are an experienced surf addict or an absolute beginner fascinated by the waves there’s a time and place for you to catch them. Arugam Bay on the East coast is globally renowned as a surfer’s paradise. Widely recognised by the international surfing community as one of the world’s ten best surf points, it even hosts an annual competition. The season there runs through July and August with die hard surfers returning year upon year to get their thrills. December and March are the best places for the waves on the South and West coasts and it is best to avoid the sport during the monsoon. Hikkaduwa on the South coast is also famed for its chilled atmosphere and party vibes, and also offers some great surfing. Further South, the waters off Ahangama, Kabalana, Midigama, Weligama, Mirissa and Matara also offer some of the best waves in Sri Lanka.
