It covers an area of over 131,000 hectares stretching from the North-Western coast to the North-Central Province, and comprises a complex of lakes called ‘Villus’ surrounded by grassy plains, set within the scrub jungle. Although the biggest attraction at Wilpattu is the elusive Leopard, all of the `big game’ in Sri Lanka including elephant, sloth bear, water buffalo, and spotted dear are found in abundance here. Being less accessible than the other national parks, Wilpattu remains unspoiled and uncrowded – a haven frequented by true nature lovers.

Ruled by 113 successive kings and four queens, Anuradhapura was a majestic sprawl of magnificent palaces, ornate pleasure gardens, exquisite sculptures and vast Buddhist temples. The three main ‘dagabas’ are amongst the biggest architectural creations of the ancient world smaller in size only to the pyramids at Giza.

Thereafter proceed on a city tour in Jaffna.

At the northern tip of Sri Lanka, the Jaffna peninsula is steeped in history – both ancient and modern. Largely inaccessible for nearly three decades, Jaffna is now free to welcome visitors, and has retained its spirit and vibrancy, despite many years of isolation and turmoil. Jaffna has undergone much hardship due to terrorism and war, and the effect of this destructive and traumatic period is still evident – although this ancient city has risen up valiantly; as it has done all throughout history. The busy town and its outskirts are a mix of old colonial charm and Hindu architecture, liberally dotted with Dutch and British style residences. The region is scattered with ancient Hindu temples with colourful statues; colonial period churches that date back to the 17C; and interestingly ruins of ancient Buddhist temples speak of long ago conflicts. The isolated islands around Jaffna peninsula are certainly worth hopping the ferry for too.
